Based on popular games like Pokémon and Tamagotchi, Axie Infinity Shard is a play-to-earn (P2E) game world in which you can battle, collect and build a kingdom for your digital pets – and these pets are actually NFTs! Axie Infinity is based on the Ronin chain, an Ethereum sidechain, and is one of the most popular P2E games, recording over 2.5m players in November 2021. The AXS token is used for in-game governance and in-game utilities, such as breeding the digital pets, called Axies.
The Sandbox is on a mission to bring blockchain to mainstream gaming. Launched in 2011, the Sandbox is another P2E virtual world where players can buy, build, create and explore digital assets. The Sandbox’s gameplay has been likened to that of Minecraft or Roblox. The SAND token is used to purchase land and, if staked, to take part in governance votes.
Gala Games have multiple games within the Gala ecosystem, all following a few simple principles: they need to be fun, owned by the players, powered by the people and they need to follow the community rules. GALA is the token used to purchase in-game assets and as a medium of exchange between players. Since there are multiple games within the ecosystem, the GALA token has multiple applications.
When it first launched in 2014, Neo billed itself as “China’s first-ever public blockchain”. Since then, some have referred to it as the Chinese version of Ethereum because it allows the deployment of smart contract applications. This feeds into NEO’s goal of enabling a “smart economy” by using a distributed network for digital assets, digital identity and smart contracts. The project is in continuous development, priding itself in its future proof approach.
Aragon is a relatively old project, having launched on the Ethereum mainnet back in 2018 (check out our Academy to find out the difference between a mainnent and testnet!). It recently became relevant again thanks to the rise of interest in DAOs. Aragon is an open-source software to create and maintain DAOs operating on the Ethereum network. The ANT token is mainly used for governance votes in DAOs, making it vital to the ecosystem.
The Graph is an indexing protocol used for querying data on networks such as Ethereum. This is incredibly important to track on-chain data, information which is vital in any situation. The Graph allows developers to publish open APIs called subgraphs. It has been used widely by dApps such as Uniswap, AAVE and Balancer.
Zcash (ZEC) is a decentralised cryptocurrency focused on privacy and anonymity. Zcash uses a very particular zero-knowledge proof called zk-SNARK, which allows nodes to verify transactions without revealing too much sensitive information on the transaction. Zcash hides the sending and receiving address wallets and the amount sent, which can be revealed for audit, but otherwise are not published on an open network tracker such as Etherum.
Launched in 2020, CRV is the governance token of the Curve DAO. Curve is a decentralised exchange platform for stablecoin trading based on an automated market maker (AMM) protocol, designed to swap, pool and earn yield on digital assets, mainly ERC-20 tokens.
