The iconic trade of 10,000 BTC for two pizzas has been forever etched into the crypto history books. At the time, it seemed like a bargain. Today, it's a trade worth millions...
History is full of memorable and important quotes. But, we think this one from programmer, Laszlo Hanyecz, written in a Bitcoin forum back in 2010, should be near the top of that list:
“I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas… like maybe 2 large ones, so I have some leftovers for the next day…”
This simple offer from Hanyecz set in motion one of the most significant moments in crypto history. Not only helping to validate Bitcoin, but also the wider concept of cryptocurrency as a legitimate and viable means of exchange with real-world utility.
Since Hanyecz placed his famous order, things have changed substantially in the world of crypto, and Bitcoin is now worth considerably more. Those who focus more on how much 10,000 Bitcoins would be worth today (around €933.6 million at the time of writing) miss the more significant message:
