The launch of Bitcoin redefined the financial landscape. In the 16 years since Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first Bitcoin block, the world’s first cryptocurrency has defined the landscape and spawned countless other projects and game-changing technologies. So as BTC marks its 16th birthday in the same year it passed the important €100,000 milestone, we’re celebrating the OG crypto.
Following the release of the Bitcoin whitepaper on Halloween in 2008, the next major milestone for Bitcoin was the mining of the first Genesis Block on January 3rd, 2009. Known by some as Block 0, it’s the figurative and literal foundation on which the world of cryptocurrency is built on. The Genesis Block contained the message: "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks," referencing a headline from The Times newspaper on that date. This acts as both a timestamp for the release, but also perhaps as a comment on the traditional finance system’s instability, marking a statement of intent for Bitcoin as an alternative financial system. The creation of the Genesis Block also introduced the first 50 bitcoins and created a framework for the broader adoption of blockchain technology. The rest, as they say, is history.
Since the Genesis Block launched 16 years ago, it’s fair to say that Bitcoin has grown up a lot. The growing mainstream adoption of Bitcoin, like the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs and significant investments from major financial institutions, has all contributed to the current market surge, pushing the price of BTC past the milestone of €100,000. But just as impressive as the price increase is the impact the technology has, and continues to have, on the future of multiple industries, not just finance.
So we’re wishing a very happy birthday to Bitcoin, we’re glad you’re here!.
To celebrate this massive moment in crypto, we’ve got two exciting opportunities to mark this special moment:
